How to Perform the Test

  1. Find a step or platform that is 12 inches (30.5 cm) high.
  2. Set a metronome to 96 beats per minute (bpm), which equals 24 steps per minute.
  3. Start stepping with the following pattern:
    • Right foot up
    • Left foot up
    • Right foot down
    • Left foot down
  4. Continue stepping for exactly 3 minutes, maintaining the cadence with the metronome.
  5. Immediately after 3 minutes, sit down and rest for 5 seconds.
  6. Begin counting your pulse for exactly 1 minute.
  7. Enter your recovery heart rate (the number of beats counted in that 1 minute) into the calculator.

Tip: Practice the stepping rhythm before starting the official test to ensure you maintain proper form and pace.
